Elk
We offer fully guided elk hunts with both bow and rifle. Our hunts are guided both 2-x-1 or 1-x-1. We offer our elk hunts in three separate areas. One hunt takes place in a general license area surrounding the Bear Lodge Mountains. Another area is area 116, encompassing the Bear Lodge Mountains northwest of Sundance, Wyoming. We also offer hunts in area 123 in Weston County, south of Upton, Wyoming.

Both of the elk hunts (general and limited quota, 116) take place in the Bear Lodge Mountain area, consisting of 65,000+ acres of both private property leases and National Forest permitted areas. Trophy quality in these areas are bulls from 300- to 340-class, with some larger.

The hunt offered in area 123 takes place on 75,000 acres of private lease. This area holds exceptional quality bulls ranging from 320- to 360-class, with some larger. This area is open to elk hunting every couple of years.

All of our hunting areas are accessed with 4x4 pickups. Some hunting is done on foot along with the use of ATVs. Lodging in these areas is conducted out of the Smith Lodge.

The 2008 season was very successful. During the September bow season 13 hunters harvested 7 bulls in addition to 8 misses and 5 cripples. Eleven of the 13 hunters took shots under 40 yards. This makes the season a 53% success rate. The largest bull taken with a bow was 350+ P&Y. Rifle hunters harvested 7 bulls out of 11 hunters for a 63% success rate. The largest bull taken with a rifle was a 345 B&C.

The 2009 season was filled with highs and lows. The September bow season was extremely hot, leading to limited rut activity and bugling. Our 6 bow hunters did not harvest a bull. However, we were 3 for 6 shooting opportunity with 3 misses and 1 cripple. Our 18 rifle hunters harvested 10 Bulls, for a 55% success rate. Average bulls taken were 310 B&C. Largest bulls were 347, 350 and 365. Many big bulls were seen throughout the year. Hopefully we will be able to harvest them next fall.

In the past, the licenses were hard to draw in the two limited-quota areas. However, with the preference point system now in effect, the drawing odds have increased significantly. We assist our hunters with all licensing and preference point applications.

Hunt Dates
Bow: September 1–30.
Rifle: September 15–December 15.
