We hunt the spring gobblers on over 55,000 acres of private leases here in Northeast Wyoming. We also have access to country in South Dakota. This allows us to provide a two-bird hunt.
Our season runs the second Saturday in April through May 20. Hunts are three days for single- and two-bird hunts and four days for three turkeys. Licenses in Wyoming can be purchased over the counter (no drawing). The South Dakota licenses are unlimited, but must be purchased over the Internet or by mail. We will provide you with the information to do this.
Over the past fifteen years our hunters have had excellent success on long-bearded birds.
Our big leases hold excellent numbers of Merriams. Combined with little hunting pressure, this makes for excellent calling opportunities on mature gobblers.
The 2005 season the turkey numbers were at an all-time high population. We again had an excellent season. Our clients were 54 for 56 on mature birds in Wyoming. Thirty of these hunters hunted the second bird in South Dakota and harvested 16 mature birds.
The 2006 season was very successful. Of the 55 Wyoming hunters, 53 took mature birds. The only two hunters not to harvest were unfortunately in camp with five other hunters, the week of April 19. This is when we experienced over 40 inches of snow during a late-spring blizzard. Still, we experienced 5 for 7 in very extreme conditions. Eleven of the hunters hunted in South Dakota on the two-bird combo. We only harvested five mature birds. The South Dakota leases received over 50 inches of snow in the same storm along with additional snow still on the ground from winter.
The 2007 season was another successful spring hunting season. We were 55 for 56 with 100% shooting opportunity on mature Merriams in Wyoming. 28 of these hunters also hunted South Dakota on the two-bird combo hunt. They harvested 17 mature birds. They had an 82% shooting opportunity.
The 2008 spring season was, again, very successful. However, it was one of the most uncooperative weather seasons we have experienced. Our success in Wyoming was 62 for 64 hunters on mature birds. There was a 100% shooting opportunity. Thirty of these hunters chose to do the second bird in South Dakota. They harvested 24 mature gobblers, with a 90% shooting opportunity.
This past 2009 season was also a very excellent season. We hunted 63 clients and harvested 63 mature Merriams. 42 clients chose to hunt the second bird in South Dakota; they harvested 33 birds. In total, 39 of 42 had shooting opportunities.
Starting in spring 2010, our hunters can choose to hunt a second bird on our leases in Wyoming. Added to the South Dakota country, this can make this a three-bird hunt, if you so choose.
